Oh, snap! It's U.S.1 #3!
The problem with that icon in the upper left corner (what is that officially called, anyway? That used to be on comics all the time.), is that it looks like our hero is endorsing whatever is happening on the cover. In this case, he's giving a wink and thumbs-up to his rig going down in flames, with him screaming in the cab.
Now, don't get me wrong. I think we're all in favor of the rig going down in flames with him screaming in the cab. I'm just surprised he's happy about it.
Anyhoo, he's sleeping, when suddenly he awakens and says, "YAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!"
After which, he goes right back to sleep. No, not really. But that would have been funny. Nice headband you're wearing to bed, pal. Reminds me of when I saw Loverboy on the Get Lucky Tour.
I swore I wouldn't rest until I found the Highwayman!
Except, of course, he was sleeping just a few panels ago, which I think everyone agrees constitutes "resting."
Anyway, the old guy there gives us the Highwayman's origin story, which is exactly what you think it is, so I won't waste your time here.
Instead, here's the big fight scene:
Yup. Swerving. You fight with a semi, and that's about it for your arsenal. Swerving.
Oh, my! Big plot twist!
The old man was the Highwayman all along! He told his own origin story! Is your mind totally blown, or what?
Wow. I spent 50 cents on all twelve issues, making my total investment of less than a nickel each, and I still feel violated.
See you tomorrow!

Twelve Days of Truckin' Terror Tuesday!

What is that he is holding in the penultimate panel? It looks like a human head.
The picture in the upper left hand corner is called the
"Corner box art".
I stayed up late on a school night just so I'd have the chance to type that without getting into trouble at work.
He sleeps with his headband on? Now that's just lazy.
'And no trace of Jeff was ever found. I swore I wouldn't rest'til I found the Highwayman and...'
'Scuse me, young fella-- but why aren't you wearing any pants?'
I wouldn't have said lazy... I would have said gay. But at the risk of offending our fine homosexual friends!
I think the fact that the corner box art has a thumbs-up pose is what makes it look like a seal of approval. For example, I don't think one of Dredd's impassive helmet would have quite the same message. Come to think of it, even a brief appearance by JD would have improved this considerably.
He sleeps with his headband on?...
I heard that Invisible Kid does, too. But maybe that's just a rumor.
