In the WHAT column of a newspaper? The Agony column??? What the heck kind of newspapers were they putting out in the 1940's???

From Chambers' (British) Dictionary:

"agony column, the part of a newspaper or magazine in which readers submit, and receive advice about, personal problems; the part of a newspaper containing special advertisements, eg for missing friends etc."

Or desperate appeals to superheroes, if you've got the money.

Hm, I always assumed when Sherlock Holmes read the agony column that it was just the same as the classifieds. Thanks for the clarification, anon!
