I want you to know that this is an only slightly edited sequence from The Fighting Yank story in Startling Comics #34:
The only thing I took out were panels where he was chasing the guys. Every time he actually caught up with them, he got his ass kicked. That. Was. Awesome!
If you watch the movie serials of the period, it's the same thing. Hero intercepts villain. Hero gets ass kicked. Cliffhanger ending with hero facing certain death (which hero barely avoids at beginning of next chapter.) Hero perseveres and wins in the end. I think the point is (or was) that Americans are RESILIENT! We could take ANYTHING thrown at us and still come out on top! (Today is another matter...)

I think the Yank might be Hal Jordan's ancestor.
I'd always assumed "Yank" was a patriotic reference, but after seeing this, I guess it was used in a different context.
He should probably drop the "Fighting" part from his superhero name...
