How Can I Refuse You, Segreb?

Still plowing through a very difficult week, but we're getting there.  Thank goodness for Action Comics #173!

And now, courtesy of Congo Bill, another installment of

Well... Touche! (tm!)

Well... Touche! (tm!)

I'm coming to the conclusion that, despite keeping up a solo feature in Action Comics for what seems like an eternity, Congo Bill wasn't one of your greatest heroes.

Exhibit "B"... a CMNS Random Slap! (tm!):

But, as is often the case, a modern revamp of the character made him awesome.

... by putting his brain into a gorilla.

For those of you who aren't comic nerds, I'm not making that up.  That's what it took.  And granted, he probably gets slapped a lot less often these days, but it's a gimmick that was actually used by the same comics company since 1981 when the brain of a super-villain called the Ultra-Humanite found its way into a giant ape.

But then again, while all gorillas are apes, not all apes are gorillas.  And the Ultra-Humanite was an albino ape (they never specified what kind of ape), and as you can see, Congo Bill is golden.

So it's totally different, I suppose.  Hur-de-dur.

Meanwhile, this really disturbed me:

Watching any animal fight another for your entertainment is really a dick move and there's a special place in Hell for you if you support this in any way, shape or form.  That is all.

And frankly, I want verification of this:

What?  So a quick visit to Bass Pro and Mr. Bulky's, and I'm a tycoon among the Eskimos?  Someone near Alaska tell me if this is the case, because I think I've found my next get-rich-quick scheme.

See you tomorrow!

Congo Bill first became Congorilla in Action Comics #248, in 1959. I'm not sure that this qualifies as "a modern revamp".

Back in the 50s, wasn't it more that Bill could transfer his consciousness into the gorilla? In the old512, he was just a gorilla because his human body had gotten old (I think).

Yeah, I think Wayne had it. My first exposure to the whole Congorilla thing was during a "flashback" issue about "the secret origin of the Justice League" that had tons of guest stars and was completely awesome. So, I'm thinking Wayne is right that it was just temporary until the resurrection of the character and the Ultra Humanite was the first to actually make a permanent home in a the body of an ape, which wasn't something Bill did until recent times... but Devil is certainly right that the "human brain in the body of a gorilla" had been going on for a loooooong time.

making real animals fight is wrong, but drawing a bull tossing a tiger in the air is pretty cool. (unless, of course, it is used to promote a general acceptance of making animals fight each other, which is the case here, i guess...)
