There's No Time to Step Aside... But Plenty of Time to Articulate What's Happening!

So we introduced the Excessively Impossibly Expository Dialogue (tm!) the other day, and contributor sPat is all over it with these dandies...

Maybe there's time to shield myself with this small dull child!

Dang! Why did I have to use up the small child on that falling pedestal?

Jimmy has the worst luck with stuff falling on him.  Maybe Metropolis has some really lax building codes.

And here's a piano that falls slowly enough for two people to comment on it:

If I lived in Metropolis, I'd be afraid to leave the house.

Thanks again, sPat!

See you tomorrow!

Also known as the issue where Superman had to keep killing Jimmy. Yunno, for his own good.

I remember in The Amazing Spider-Man's Bart Hamilton/Green Goblin storyline, there was a scene(issue 180, maybe?) where Spider Man, the Goblin, and Silvermane were falling to the floor of Carnegie Hall, and they had time for a lengthy three-way conversation.

Spidey is pretty chatty, Aaron, so it probably happened more than once... but I'm not going through all those issues of Amazing again any time soon! :-)

I will play devils advocate here and say that the Jimmy ones should have been thought bubbles. A person can think awhole lot in a split second. Thing is, they didn't come up with the "thought bubble" thing for along time, did they? So everyone had to say everything that they were thinking out loud so that the reader would know what it was.

I did some lookin, but I can't find anyplace on the interwebs that says that they know when and where "thought bubbles" were starting to be used.

Wow... I can't even imagine when the thought bubbles began. For all we know, they probably began in comic strips somewhere, but I've no idea where.

I did find some things that showed that way way way back in some oil paintings and illustrations that like ribbons or banners with words on them were sometimes shown leading from the mouths of people in the pictures portraying what the people were saying.
